According to Nepalese chronicles, 'Patan' was founded by King Varadeva in 299 CE. Some scholars believe that it was the capital of the Licchavi, Thakuri, and Malla dynasties.

 

The city is known for its craftsmen, particularly metalworkers and wood-carvers. There are fine Buddhist temples, including the Temple of Machendranath in Durbar Square. The town contains a number of viharas, originally Buddhist monasteries but now inhabited by descendants of the priests who once occupied them.

 

It is also believed, the Mauryan emperor Ashoka visited the town about 250 BCE and built the four large stupas (Buddhist temples and burial mounds) that still exist on the four sides of the town.

Though I am not a native of Patan, I’ve lived at the edge of the city long enough to feel like I belong. As a child, I felt lost in the chaos of the city. As a teenager it intrigued me and pulled me in. A brisk walk through many narrow and few wide lanes, leads us right into the heart of Patan Durbar Square. 

 

There are a few different paths you can take once you cross Patan Dhoka, the gate that signifies the entrance into one of the oldest cities of Nepal. 

 

Each path has its own little gems. Some tucked away bazar or some flamboyant architecture. Some even crumbling brick and mud houses or temples, leaning against the new cemented structures. 

 

The road leading to the Square has inspired me as much as the Square itself. 

 

Most motifs in the ‘Patan’ collection are drawn from my numerous walks from and within the Square. A small fading wood carving, or the sight of freshly cooked street food. All compelling, all inspiring.
